Congratulations to Adelaide’s Vision Australia Radio volunteer Peter Greco who this month celebrates 30 years behind the microphone giving voice to people who are blind or have low vision.
What began back in October 1991 with Peter giving weekly updates on blind cricket scores has developed into producing three weekly national radio programs covering news, current affairs and events from the blindness sector.
In the past three decades Peter has never tired from delivering information concerning NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme) or news from the interviews with key politicians, Paralympians, employment, technology and education, most recently have been updates from the Royal Commission Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability. Peter covers so many different issues that are of concern to people who are blind or have low vision each week and range from social justice and advocacy to art and entertainment.
Vision Australia Radio manager Conrad Browne says that Peter exemplifies exactly what Vision Australia Radio is about. ‘While Vision Australia provides content for people who are blind or have low vision its ideal is to have more people with that lived experience behind the microphone. Peter’s lived experience, coupled with his passion for radio makes him the ideal host, listeners are hearing to someone who understands some of the issues they face and will then represent them and ask the questions they would like to ask themselves.’
Producing and presenting three programs a week is a big commitment but Peter says it’s his love of radio that keeps him motivated. When interviewed in June 2021, Peter stated that "only another radio lover would understand why radio is so special, but I love it immediacy and it’s inclusivity. Radio, especially a community network like Vision Australia Radio, gives people a platform that mainstream media doesn’t, so they can tell their stories in their own words”.
On behalf of the Vision Australia Radio community, we congratulate Peter on this incredible achievement and also thank all of those who have supported Peter along the way including former volunteer Phil Vanderpeer who contributed as a Panel Operator for Focal Point and Vision Extra on Vision Australia Radio in Adelaide for many years.
