Nothing’s off limits in new Vision Australia audio series

Vision Australia is developing ‘Nothing’s Off Limits’, a podcast series where experts and people with lived experience of blindness or having low vision sit down and discuss topics we love to avoid but absolutely need to talk about.

We’ll be discussing the subjects which can feel too awkward or embarrassing to talk about in a straightforward and open way. The things we feel are ‘off limits’.

Rather than skirt around these topics, things like mental health, dating, personal care, safety, nutrition, periods, disclosure and identity, we’ll address them head-on.

We know from surveying our community that people want to know about these very topics.

And, as the name suggests, nothing will be off limits.

Topics we’re exploring include:

  • Mental health
  • Staying safe inside and outside the home and situational awareness
  • Wellbeing, nutrition and exercise
  • Personal hygiene and grooming, using public facilities and other spaces, period management
  • Healthy (and unhealthy) relationships
  • Appearance and body image
  • Adult entertainment, services and products
  • Dating
  • Identity, community, fitting in standing out, disclosure
  • Not blind enough? Low vision-specific experiences.

Where to listen

Episodes will broadcast on Vision Australia Radio then available for download to listen when and where suits you. The first few episodes are expected to go live in March.

Sam’s Talking Vision in 2021.

Sam Colley is set to be the new presenter of popular Vision Australia Radio (and podcast) program Talking Vision. At of the end of February, after almost six years, host Stella Glorie will be officially signing off and handing the mic over.

“I am thrilled Sam’s stepping in to both producing and hosting the program, he brings enthusiasm, youth, skill, natural aptitude and (very importantly) lived experience. He will give Talking Vision a fabulous new lease of life while continuing its strong presence and ever-growing audience.” said Stella.

A communications and radio graduate, Sam joined Vision Australia in March 2019 through its Career Start Program with his work being split across both the communications department and the radio team.

During this time as he honed his skills, it became obvious that radio is a real calling for him.

“I’m proud and honoured to be working for an organisation where I can share my lived experience with low vision and bring this to my new role as host and producer,’ said Sam

Talking Vision will continue to focus on issues relating to blindness and low vision including stories of inspiration and achievement news and information and Vision Australia services.

Talking Vision can be heard nationally, Wednesdays at 3:30pm on your local Vision Australia Radio service with replays across the week. It is also available via podcast at varadio.org and on Spotify or iTunes. Visit varadio.org for more on the networks program offerings.

That’s a Wrap! Carols 2020

On Christmas Eve 2020, Vision Australia Radio again simulcast an audio described broadcast of the Carols by Candlelight. With COVID restrictions being in play which ultimately resulted in no physical audience at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl in Melbourne, it was more important than ever that we simulcast this popular Christmas event, making it more inclusive to people who are blind or have low vision.

With thanks to our simulcast sponsors Belong we broadcast a preview show from 7pm, with the live broadcast kicking off at 8pm. We would like to show our appreciation to all who helped make the radio broadcast possible starting with our Vision Australia Radio sponsor Belong, our team of volunteers and staff but also those who tuned in across the evening.

We would love your feedback on our simulcast in the aim of constantly bettering our service for future years. To share your thoughts and feedback, email [email protected]
