About us
Vision Australia Radio Perth (also known as 6RPH and VAR Perth) can be found on 990AM and VA Radio on DAB+ digital radio. It is the local radio reading service in Western Australia, providing access to information and inclusion for the local blind, low vision and print disabled communities.
VAR Perth delivers over 18 hours of local programs each week thanks to 50 dedicated and passionate volunteers alongside content from the Vision Australia Radio Network. McNair listener survey data estimated in 2019 that 115,000 people aged 15+, or 8% of all Perth people aged 15+, listen to 6RPH Vision Australia Radio Perth at some time in a month.
In 2018, the VAR Perth team won the Community Broadcasting Association of Australia award for Excellence in Creative Audio for a short program series called ‘The Tourist’. Three of Perth’s most well-known tourist attractions were brought to life for people who are blind or have low vision, using audio description, sound effects and guided tours. These were produced and broadcast across the Vision Australia Radio network, and you can find out more and listen to these programs here.
Volunteer readers, presenters and administration support volunteers are always needed to keep this valuable service in Perth on air. Contact the local Coordinator of Volunteers to find out more.
