Vision Australia Radio staff celebrate 10 years

11 February 2026

Vision Australia Radio (VAR) recently came together at our Kooyong site to celebrate a very special milestone, the ten‑year working anniversaries of two much‑valued members of its team, Marilyn Bednar and Nicholas Thompson.

An afternoon to celebrate

On Thursday, January 19, VAR staff gathered over coffee and cake to mark the occasion, sharing a few laughs and reflecting on the past decade of working together as a team. The afternoon tea was a chance to pause, connect and acknowledge the commitment and care that Marilyn and Nick bring to their roles every day.

A decade of dedication and impact

As Coordinator of Volunteers, Marilyn Bednar has played a pivotal role in supporting and nurturing the volunteer workforce that underpins Vision Australia Radio’s success. Her leadership, compassion and deep understanding of the needs of our volunteers have helped ensure that VAR continues to deliver a welcoming, inclusive and high‑quality service to our listeners.

In his role as VAR Production Manager, Nicholas Thompson has overseen the technical, creative and production elements that keep VAR sounding professional, accessible and engaging. Nick’s extensive experience and level-headed problem‑solving approach have been instrumental in maintaining the consistency and quality of our broadcasts across Melbourne, Victoria and around Australia.

Navigating challenges together

Over the past ten years, Marilyn and Nick have guided VAR’s Kooyong based volunteers through significant challenges, particularly during Melbourne’s extended COVID‑19 lockdowns. During this period, critical work was required to keep live programming on air while navigating social‑distancing requirements and protecting the health and wellbeing of our workforce. Their adaptability, teamwork and commitment ensured listeners could continue to rely on VAR for connection and information at a time when it mattered most.

Celebrating the highs

Alongside these challenges, there have also been many proud moments. Marilyn and Nick have both contributed to a range of audio projects that have been recognised through nominations at the Community Broadcasting Association of Australia (CBAA) Community Broadcasting Awards, highlighting the strength and creativity of the VAR team.

“Marilyn and Nick have played an important role in the success and resilience of Vision Australia Radio over the past decade. Their passion, expertise and genuine care for our volunteers, staff and listeners has helped ensure VAR continued to thrive, even through the most challenging periods. We are incredibly grateful for their contribution and commitment.”
