More than reading papers to people: How Vision Australia Radio connects communities with festivals

26 October 2026

Vision Australia Radio’s partnerships with major community and cultural events are about much more than promoting what’s on.

They provide an opportunity to increase awareness of Vision Australia, connect people who are blind, have low vision or live with print disability with accessible community experiences, and help event organisers better communicate the accessibility services, artists and sessions relevant to our community.

Our recent 2026 partnership with Melbourne Writers Festival demonstrates how this can work.

Connecting our community with cultural events

Melbourne Writers Festival celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2026, attracting 25,173 attendees across 91 events featuring 169 writers and speakers. Attendance increased 17.5% year on year, with more than half of the festival program selling out.

For Vision Australia Radio, partnering with an event of this scale provides an opportunity to do something particularly relevant to our purpose.

We can help our audience discover accessible festival experiences, writers and artists with disability, relevant sessions and other information that gives people greater confidence to participate in their communities.

The festival itself featured a diverse group of voices, with 13% of participating writers identifying as writers with disability.

At the same time, the partnership puts the Vision Australia Radio brand in front of audiences who may have had little previous interaction with Vision Australia.

What Vision Australia Radio brings to partnerships

Vision Australia Radio gives Vision Australia a platform for building relationships with organisations and communities around the country.

Through radio, podcasts, interviews, online articles and social media, we can help external organisations communicate information in an accessible, targeted way to people who are blind, have low vision or live with print disability.

We can also help partners identify the stories, speakers, services and accessibility initiatives that are particularly relevant to our audience.

For an event organiser, that can mean reaching a community they genuinely want to include. For Vision Australia, it creates greater awareness of who we are and what we do. And for our listeners, it provides information that can help them participate more fully in cultural and community life.

That is where the real value of Vision Australia Radio's community partnerships lies.

We don't just promote events. We can help make the connection between an event, its accessibility initiatives and the people those initiatives are designed to support.
