VAR Preview: 'Behind The Scenes' talks art and climate change

03 May 2019

Is it the start of May already? If Simone Schinkel, Theatre Network Australia (TNA)’s general manager, is sitting in the studio, then it must be.

Simone will be here for our monthly catch up with TNA’s activities and to introduce us to the TNA member of the month Joe Toohey, executive director and CEO of Regional Arts Victoria.

Simone and Joe are also co-convenors of the Arts Industry Council of Victoria and if you don’t know what that is, then you’ll have to listen to the interview.

Meanwhile, in case you haven’t noticed all the posters around town, we’re in the middle of the Art + Climate = Change Festival, featuring more than 30 curated socially-engaged events looking at ideas about climate change through theatre performances, exhibitions, talks and much more.

One of these events is A Thousand Tides, an evocative mix of fine art and natural science. We’ll meet Vera Moller, the artist behind the event.

Then we’re off to the Abbotsford Convent where the extraordinary dancer, actor, choreographer and creator of Bhuto cabaret, Yumi Umiumare, is working with a group of performers including members of Weave Dance Company to create BhutoOUT’s Forbidden Laughter. Yumi and dramaturg/performer Maude Davey take a break from rehearsals to tell us all about it.

And to wrap up this week we’re off to the Stonnington Jazz Festival with artistic director Chelsea Wilson, who’ll guide us through her exciting programme based around the festival hub at Chapel off Chapel.

That’s all on this week’s edition of Behind the Scenes with Chris Thompson, right here on Vision Australia Radio.
