VAR Preview: 'Behind The Scenes' chats about the La Mama Theatre rebuild

17 May 2019

It’s a year since a devastating fire took La Mama Theatre away from us, so it’s good news that the anniversary has been marked by the release of plans for the rebuild of the iconic theatre.

We’ll meet La Mama artistic director Liz Jones, who’ll tell us what the last year’s been like, and how we can chip in to support the restoration of a much-loved cultural institution. While we’re at it, we’ll congratulate her on being awarded this year’s Sue Nattrass Award for exceptional service to the live performance industry.

Meanwhile, Chapter 2 is underway at Theatre Works, but what is it, and how is it different from Chapter 1? We’ll ask Theatre Works general manager Dianne Toulson all about it. We’ll then meet Laura Lethlean, the artistic director of The Anchor Theatre Company who are presenting The Three Graces as part of the Theatre Works programme.

Then it’s time to catch up with the multi-talented Mike McLeish, who’s performing in The Production Company’s premiere of David Bowie’s Lazarus, the music theatre performance based on the same book as the 1976 film, The Man Who Fell To Earth.

Lazarus is the show that Bowie and Irish playwright Enda Walsh finished work on just before Bowie’s death in 2016.

Finally, Ben Laden from Little Big Shots drops into the studio to catch us up with this year’s film festival for and by children and young people.

Ben tells us about its collaboration with the Children’s International Film Festival, which is presented by four of the best independent cinemas around; The Classic, The Lido, The Cameo and The Ritz.

That’s all on this week’s edition of Behind the Scenes with Chris Thompson, right here on Vision Australia Radio.
